Ask an Eye M.D. Answer Archive
Question:
This question seems really trivial after reading all of the other questions but here goes: my husband and myself are extremely nearsighted and our 3-year-old likes to "read" herself to sleep every night. Will this cause an undesired strain on her eyes? Should I try to curb this traditionally coveted habit?
Answer:
I would not discourage this habit at all. I know of no concern about damage to your 3-year-old's eyes by reading too much. You are also correct that this is something that you should have no hesitation in encouraging.
