Ask an Eye M.D. Answer Archive
Question:
My nephew is 13 and has strabismus. He was diagnosed when he was 4 months old and has had 3 surgeries since. He visits a specialist in Toronto every 6 months. Can you tell me of any organizations that offer support for teenagers with strabismus? He feels very alone and is regularly bullied by kids because he is different.
Answer:
While I cannot confirm the usefulness or validity of support groups, I am aware of strabismus support groups on Yahoo groups, Facebook, and elsewhere. Medical support groups can be very helpful to patients. The most important need, however, is to have a strong family and social support network.
