Ask an Eye M.D. Answer Archive
Who should have a digital retinal examination? My new optometrist recommends it for everyone for an additional $25 fee that is not covered by my vision plan. I can't afford an extra expense if it's not necessary. I'm 60 years old with normal blood pressure and normal blood sugar.
I would be very cautious about such exams unless you have specific symptoms and/or problems. I would suggest asking for a thorough explanation, and if this is not satisfactory, obtaining a second opinion from an ophthalmologist.
