Question:
My astigmatism changed from .50 to 3.5 within four years. Is this a bad sign or normal?

Answer:
Astigmatism can spontaneously change over time. A 3 unit change in four years is greater than we usually observe but it can happen. The first thing I would suggest is to get a re-measurement with this change in mind to see if it actually did occur. Astigmatism is not a sign of any pathology so even if this actually did occur as you indicate, it does not mean that anything was wrong with your eyes.
