Ask an Eye M.D. Answer Archive

Question:
I cut the white part of my eye with my sharp fingernail and now there is a blood spot. Will it be OK or should I see an Eye M.D.?

Answer:
You should see an Eye M.D. Usually, a cut on the white of the eye only penetrates the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is the clear tissue overlying the white sclera, and might require direct repair or antibiotic treatment.  However, if the cut has penetrated the deeper sclera, you can be at risk for infection, retinal detachment, and other serious complications, and you may require surgery. Please get this checked.
