Question:
My boyfriend was in a bad car accident and in the accident his cornea was cut. He had surgery to repair it but because of severe nerve damage they are unsure if he will be able to keep his eye. My concern with this is him playing certain video games and if doing so could cause any further neurological damage, seizures or both. Could he be causing any further damage by playing video games?

Answer:
I am sorry to hear about your boyfriend. There are no known ocular consequences of playing video games. Now would be a good time to begin adapting to life as a person with useful vision in one eye. I would encourage your boyfriend to wear protective eyewear with polycarbonate lenses and to avoid dangerous sports (basketball, racquetball) and occupations requiring drilling, hammering, balance, heights, or explosives. Be sure to ask his ophthalmologist (Eye M.D.) about a consultation with a subspecialist to see if it's possible to repair his injured eye.
