Question:
Can an ophthalmologist perform a brow lift or does it have to be a plastic surgeon?
Answer:
In general, a small number of qualified ophthalmologists and plastic surgeons can perform and manage brow lifts. Those ophthalmologists who pursue extra training in ophthalmic plastic surgery after residency (the training necessary to become an ophthalmologist) are qualified to perform brow lifts as are plastic surgeons. Oculoplastic surgeons train an extra year or two to specialize in plastic surgery around the eye. A comprehensive (generalist) ophthalmologist would not generally perform or want to perform such surgery and generally would refer the patient to a qualified oculoplastics surgeon. Be certain that either the ophthalmologist or the plastic surgeon is board certified.
