Ask an Eye M.D. Answer Archive
Question:
I got hit with a ball on the eye. During the day I see fine, but at night I see a dark spot at the bottom of my vision. What does this symptom mean and how is it treated?
Answer:
The most important thing to do is to see an Eye M.D. or ophthalmologist or retina surgeon/specialist to examine the retina after a severe injury to the eye, like getting hit in the eye with a ball. A dark spot immediately after an injury could be swelling in the retina which typically subsides, but it could be blood in the eye or a retinal tear or retinal detachment. Those conditions require prompt treatment and could cause loss of vision if untreated.
