Ask an Eye M.D. Answer Archive
Question:
Is it possible for the eyes to become dependent on artificial tears?
Answer:
Artificial tears are typically used to treat dry eye symptoms. You may notice an increasing need for them as your dry eye worsens. Unfortunately, the incidence and severity of dry eye increases as we grow older. However, there are some eye conditions that are treatable and this treatment can reduce the need for artificial tears. So it is critical to get a careful eye exam by an Eye M.D., a physician specially trained in eye diseases and treatment, to be sure there is not a treatable underlying cause for your need for artificial tears.
